If
you are a corporate leader, business owner or manager, and
you deal with labor policy, you need to have a copy of the FLSA in
your library.
A
friend and local businessman called me to ask a question
about employee lunches and overtime pay, which prompted me
to write this material, and to make a valuable resource
available to my readers.
The
Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. It's tough to find,
even online, so here's a link to a PDF file found on my
website called The Employers Law Guide, a Dept. of Labor
publication that organizes the various laws and shows how
they apply to businesses. Click
Here!
The
publication is 114 pages, but it's a must have
for any business person dealing with employee wages and
benefits.
- You
can also go to the U.S. Department of Labor website www.dol.gov
and browse around. This site is pretty
interactive, with special 'Compliance Assistance'
sections. One of the sections can assist you in
determining if a person can be 'exempt' (salary) or
'non-exempt' (hourly and eligible for overtime pay)
- You
can also find out how to properly calculate overtime pay
when bonuses, commissions, and abnormal scheduling are
part of job requirements.
If
you want to see both the Fair Labor Standards Act (the
actual law) and it's regulations, click
here to go to my website where it is stored and
available for you to view or download (again
an Acrobat pdf file).
By
digging through the Department of Labor's website at www.dol.gov,
you can find a webpage that lists all the major
laws they are responsible for enforcing -- from the Black
Lung Benefits Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, to
the Whistleblowers Protection act. Click

A
Tip from the ThinkTank
--
If
you want to know if your business/career efforts are
working just ask yourself these two questions:
When
you first get up in the morning, "What am I going
to do today that will help me reach my goals?
And
at the end of each day, "What did I do today to
help me reach my goals?
Incredibly
simple, yet VERY powerful.
Don't
have a vision and strategy? If that bothers you,
when are you going to do something about that?
Remember
-- as one of my clients recently said to me, "The
sky is up, the ground is down and I know coaching
works".
There's
really no excuse because the first hour is on me.
