"Inside
every successful business leader there is an even more
ambitious one trying to get out. He or she just needs
a little help."
It's
all about attitude -- not policies and procedures.
Great bosses create great bosses. They accomplish this
by smart hiring, effective delegation of responsibilities, and
inspiring those they lead.
After
interviewing dozens of business leaders, and focusing on the
kinds of managers and mentors that inspired them, here is what
they said are the simple truths about great leaders.
- Hire
nothing but the best talent. Make certain that they
have a 'realistic job preview'.

Weed
out those employees who are not fitting in with your
organizational strategy. If you can't inspire them,
energize them, and get them to take the initiative, maybe
someone else can. Don't consider it a failure on your
part. Not cutting them loose can adversely affect your
overall team productivity, and the chance for those folks to
find work for which they are better suited.
Tell
your team what needs to be done, by when, and why.
Remember, they're grown ups -- treat them that way.
Let
people do their jobs! If you or your team leaders have
chosen them for that role, don't interfere.
Train,
train, train. (sung to the tune
'Chain
of Fools'
by Aretha Franklin,
choreography by John Travolta) You must give
them the tools and
training they need to accomplish the work.
Listen
to your people. They often have the answers you seek.
Eliminate
any barriers that are in the way and preventing them from
meeting their goals.
Track
the progress of each individual and the team as a unit.
Publicly
and privately acknowledge individuals and teams of their
good work.
The
ways that successful leaders form top-notch teams is by
hiring through a method I recommend called
"Top-Grading" (Brad
Smart).
Don't get trapped by the need to fill the position as quickly
as possible. The more critical the role, the the
more care you should take in choosing the occupant.
We'll
cover more of
the 'World-Class Hiring
Process' when I discuss employee retention
which confirms that one of the best ways to reduce unplanned turnover
is to hire the best person for the job.

Tip from the ThinkTank
--
Are
your children involved with sports? When they perform
poorly, it's not necessary that you belittle them or even
remind them about it. Believe me, they've already been
too hard on themselves. Don't try and cover it up
either. Kids
know that telling them that they did
great when they know they didn't is a big fat lie.
Acknowledge
their pain and suffering, and that you know they did their
best. They'll
become better
athletes and leaders from your
unconditional positive support,
truth about sub-par performance in REALLY small
doses, and the fact that you are incredibly proud of their best
efforts.
