Cyber Skill #17
Virus protection

Introduction
I'm not even going to try to get your attention about using an Anti-Virus program on your computer.  My getting on a soap-box probably wouldn't do any good because unless you're a believer in having and updating your virus protection software 2-5 times week, nothing I can say is going to make any difference.

I, too, used to be a non-believer.  Even after I lost my entire hard drive due to a virus in 1993, I still figured I'd "be okay."  It wasn't until I lost an entire year's worth of work in 1997 did I snap out of my "I'm invincible" delusion and ran out and got a copy of Norton Anti-Virus and I've updated it at least weekly since then.  I learned.

Now, if you don't care about your own computer, do you care about the computers of your friends?  Remember, lots of the new viruses go through your email address book and send infected files to EVERYONE you know.

Okay, enough of that.

What to do
If you're interested in being Certified Cyber, go grab a copy of Norton, by Symantec (SystemWorks or Anti-Virus Program) via http://www.norton.com. And renew the service contract every year.  It's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Setting up reminders to update your virus protection
With Norton, you have the option of having the Norton software program update your virus software every couple of days, or you doing it manually, either by remembering or by having Norton software splash up a reminder on your desktop from time to time.

Here are the steps to scheduling your auto-updates.

Step 1
Launch Norton, select Norton AntiVirus

Step 2
Double click on Scheduling

Step 3
Double click on event names
Or, if you are just setting this up for the first time, click instead on Add Event and the Wizard will walk you through the process.

That's it!  You're done!
Once you get in the habit of this, it's easy to keep current.

Note
There ARE other Anti-Virus software programs (McAfee is also very popular).  But I've had more luck/ease with Norton.  Also, you can use your computer while Norton is working in the background.

Was something not clear?  Was there a typo or other error?
