Welcome and thanks for subscribing to the CyberSkills E-Course.  Please find the details for Lesson #1 below.  Just a reminder/disclaimer -- some of the processes may have changed due to updates to Internet Explorer and the various Windows operating systems, but this is a great place to get started.

As long as you're using a version of Windows (not Mac) you'll be able to benefit greatly from this course.  And, some of the steps/illustrations relate to specific version numbers of software, as follows:
Windows 98, 2nd edition    Outlook 2000 (NOT Outlook Express)      Front Page 2000       Internet Explorer 5

Cyber Skill #1
How to upload website files via FTP

Introduction
If you have a website, you'll want to be able to upload your html and gif files from your personal computer's hard drive to the hard drive of the computer that hosts your website.  The best way to transfer these files from your computer to the computer that hosts/displays your website to the world, is to use a free little piece of software that does this for you.  This little piece of software is called FTP.  There are many brands; I've included a link to the free version that I use
often, from ipswitch.

If you don't have a website yet, save this Tip for when you do.

Before you start, you'll need to ask your web hosting company for the info described in Step 5 below, as well ask him/her to which directory you should be uploading your files.  And this notice from a graduate of this program:
"I learned this one the hard way -- turn your firewall software off when using the FTP software. Otherwise it
may not work. Or at least figure out how to disable the firewall for that application. When I turned the firewall off -- the FTP software worked like a charm."

Step 1.
Many Internet Service Providers offer software to upload your files.  If you don't already have ftp (file transfer protocol) software:

Download the software from
http://www.ipswitch.com
At the site, click on the "download evaluations" link at the very top and then look for WS_FTP LE 5.08 (or similar) in the download area.  This is the FREE one (it doesn't expire) and it works just fine to get started with.

Step 2.
Install the software after it downloads.
(You'll be prompted to do so.)

Step 3.
After installation, launch the FTP software.
(Look on your desktop; it's probably there.)

Step 4.
You'll see this:

Step 5.
Fill in these fields:
Profile Name:  My Web Site (or whatever)
Host Name/Address:  ftp.xxxx.com (ask your web hosting company)
User ID: (ask your web hosting company)
Password (ask your web hosting company)
Account: optional, ask your web hosting company if needed)
Do not check the box next to Anonymous
Do check the box next to Save Password
Click on OK

Step 6.
Upload your files
After you click OK, you'll see something like this:

The left panel is YOUR hard drive. The right panel is your ISPs/website's "hard drive."
The goal is to transfer files from your hard drive to your ISPs/website's hard drive.
You do this by clicking (once, to highlight) on the file(s) in the left panel that you want to upload/transfer.
Once you've done this, click on the right arrow button (circled in red) and wait for all files to be transferred.  Look for the "Transfer Complete" indication (bottom left).

Tip:  Double click on the green arrow (circled in green) in the left panel to find the directory/location where the files are that you want to upload.  And, you may need to also double click the green button on the right panel (circled in green) to get to the location where you should be uploading your html and gif files to.

Step 7.
Double check.
Once you've uploaded your file(s), you always want to make sure that the pages look right. So, open up your web browser and type in the URL of your website and double check EACH of the files you uploaded to make sure they look right.  Remember to refresh your browser if the new files aren't showing up correctly.
